Bone Cancer Symptoms

Carcinoma or Cancer is a dreaded disease. But when a person is afflicted with bone cancer, the condition becomes even more difficult because the patient is often rendered completely immobile. Although the condition is relatively rare in the United States, it is better to be knowledgeable about the various symptoms of bone cancer so that you can take the necessary  precautions well in time.

Types- Cancer which originates within the bone destroys the normal bone tissue. Osteosarcoma develops in the bone of the upper arm and thigh often affecting the knees as well. Cancer of the pelvic region, upper leg as well as the shoulders is known as chondrosarcoma. Ewing’s sarcoma, on the other hand, can affect the hips and spine but is more commonly seen to affect the long bones of both the arms and the leg.

Symptoms- Initial symptoms of Bone cancer does not vary greatly from other kinds of cancer. A low grade fever coupled with occasional chills and a general feeling of unease is all that the patient can perceive. However, there may be persistent inflammation in and around the prominent bony regions in case of Bone cancer.

There may be pain associated with bone cancer too. The pain is often localized and seems to stem from the bones of the area. Losing weight steadily without any apparent reason may well indicate the presence of Bone cancer.

Effects- The bone tissue gradually weakens as the healthy cells get replaced by cancerous ones. Such weakening may leave the patient susceptible to fractures. While calcium supplements may help in boosting up the bones temporarily,  nothing can actually stop the steady degradation of the bone tissue.

Precautions- It is advisable to use a wheel chair or other walking aids if the thigh or the leg bone becomes weakened. Although pain and weak bones do not necessarily mean cancer, it will be wise to consult with a doctor if the pain and inflammation around the bones or joints persist.
