Best Diabetic Snacks

March 5, 2010

Diabetics have to pay a lot of attention in eating the right types of foods. Many foods can work to be just poisons for the diabetics. There are several healthy diabetic snacks that can help control blood sugar. These foods can help diabetics to keep blood sugar levels in a more normal range.Diabetics must include healthy snacks between meals. This can limit spikes in blood sugar that can happen when a person only eats three large meals. Having healthier snacks and eating small meals is the best way out for diabetics. In this way they can have even blood sugar levels and maintain their energy levels in a higher position.

Fresh vegetables and fruits are the best snacks for diabetics. This is because fruits and vegetables are low on calories and loaded with fiber. You can also use a non-fat salad dressing if you do not wish to eat them plain. Mushrooms, lettuce, pepper and broccoli are ideal vegetables for diabetics. Hummus is also a very good snack for diabetics. Though potatoes are not ideal for use by diabetics, yams and sweet potatoes can be included.

You can bake or cook them and add some cinnamon. Another good snack choice is fruits such as apples which contain a fiber called pectin. You can also include fruits such as cherries, strawberries, oranges, plums and pears that can prevent spikes in blood sugar after eating. Some fruits such as dates and watermelon must be avoided as they can cause blood sugar levels to rise significantly.

You must refrain from drinking fruit juices that are filled with sugar. Low fat cottage cheese and fresh fruit make ideal snack items. Both are low in fat and calories. While the cottage cheese can provide protein and dairy the fruit provides fiber. This is the best combination for a diabetic.

Nuts are another best snack item for diabetics. They contain healthy fats which are also good in terms of heart health. They make you feel full faster because of the rich fiber content. You can choose nuts such as cashews, almonds and walnuts. You must make sure to eat only a handful of nuts daily because they can also be high on calories. You can also include non-fat yogurt and milk which are suitable diabetic snacks.
