Before and After a Bypass Surgery

You may need a to have a planned bypass or an emergency one. If it is a planned bypass then you will need to undergo some tests before the operation is to take place. You will also need to follow certain specific instructions.

You will be required to quit smoking and maintain a normal level of blood pressure. If you are suffering from any infection before the surgery it will need to be treated and cured before the surgery takes place. If you are a diabetic you will need to control your blood sugar levels.

Once the surgery is over you will be put on a ventilator which will be removed on the same day unless you suffer from any other respiratory ailment. You will do regular tests for the first three days post surgery. Your pulse and blood pressure will be taken regularly. You will be made to start a liquid diet after the first day of surgery.  You will experience stiffness around your shoulder; this is due to the surgery and is nothing to worry about.

Once you get mobile it will loosen up and get normal. You will most likely be discharged within a week and will need to come for a check up after fifteen days. After the surgery a physiotherapist will visit you and tell you how to ease the pain due to the surgery and any other respiratory problems that may come up after the surgery.

Once you get home there are certain guide lines that you will need to follow. There will be a change and some restrictions in your diet. You will be asked to start exercising. Just simple slow walking is enough after your surgery. You will constantly be experiencing pain in the chest area; but that is more psychological and is actually nothing to worry about. This will pass and is most common in the first two months after the surgery. You should visit your family doctor every month for the first six months post your surgery for a routine check up.

It is always better to prevent heart problems and taking correct care of yourself and your body may prevent you from having a surgery.
