Aromatherapy
A lot of people swear by aromatherapy. They feel that it is a much better way of achieving physical and mental well being than the conventional medicines. Treatment with scented oils is known as aromatherapy. These oils also provide mental relaxation.
History-This method of using aromatic oils for healing is an age old process. The Egyptians, Chinese, French and other Europeans had all used it effectively to cure bodily disorders and for relaxation.
Aromatherapy has gained popularity again in the 21st century because the herbs and botanical extracts from plants cause no side effects and are inexpensive as well.
Source of Oils- The oils are extracts from different parts of the plant namely leaves, bark, stems, roots, even flowers and buds. After the essential parts of a plant are collected, the oil is extracted by the process of simple distillation, cold pressing or steam distillation.
Using Aromatherapy- Oils are mainly used as a means of relaxation in spas and other rejuvenating centers. The oils may be used individually or a combination of oils may be taken. The heady aroma of the oil together with the soothing atmosphere tends to relax the muscles and the person undergoing the therapy feels wonderfully relaxed. This helps in getting rid of fatigue and stress. It also helps in pain management.
But there are other oils which have medicinal properties and can be successfully used in treating diseases. Some oils may help to stimulate the release of hormones in the blood, others may act as tranquilizers inducing sleep, yet others may have antiseptic or analgesic properties. Lavender oil, in particular, can cure skin burns.
Method of using Aromatherapy- The oil must be inhaled properly through the nostrils during such therapy. Once inside the system, it stimulates the brain and accounts for the feeling of emotional well being. Some oils can also help in controlling the rate of heart beat, ease headaches and lower the blood pressure.
