All about Wearing Braces
Braces on your teeth were synonymous with being ugly once upon a time. It is not so anymore. They are usually worn by children in order to straighten out the alignment of teeth. Like every other kind of contraption, braces have evolved over time too.
The modern braces can be attached to the individual tooth and are totally removable. You can also settle for fixed braces if you so desire. Some braces can also be fixed behind the tooth making it inconspicuous. However, there is no need to hide your ugly braces anymore. Your child can flaunt the trendy and colorful braces thereby setting up a new style at school.
Preparing to wear braces- It is a good idea to tell your child about the entire process and its purpose in advance. Going through books or videos describing each detail is highly recommended as well. Be sure to explain each process by emphasizing its necessity. It is not wise to scare your child with talks of drilling into the tooth. Just assure him/her that the entire process will be over in a mater of hours. It is best to prepare the child to face some discomfort.
Visiting the orthodontist- The orthodontist will have to take X-rays of your child’s teeth at first. This will enable him to check whether braces are really necessary for your child in the first place. Impressions of the mouth are generally taken during the second appointment and your child will have to visit the orthodontist at least once every month in order to get the braces adjusted properly.
Caring for the Braces-Brushing the teeth after every meal is necessary if you want your child to benefit by wearing them. Flossing everyday with the aid of threaders in order to clean the area between braces is a good idea as well. Broken or loose braces may do more harm than good. It is mandatory to replace the braces once you find that your child has damaged them.
Diet- Excessive sugar in the food will build up plaque leading to teeth and gum disease. Starchy foods also have a similar effect. Refrain your child from indulging in such food substances. Also warn him/her to avoid eating sticky sweets or caramelized nuts as they tend to adhere to the braces making it extremely difficult for proper cleaning.
