Basics of Root Canal Treatment
A root canal is a small capillary which carries with it a bundle of blood and nerve cells from the base of the tooth to the crown or the visible part of the tooth. The contents of the capillary nourish the tooth and keeps it alive.
The extreme pain is caused by the damage to the nerve supplying the tooth. The damage may be due to cavities of the tooth which happen to touch the nerve or due to infections and accidental fissures or cracks in the tooth which reach the base of the tooth.
Root canal treatment helps in getting rid of the pain by removing the diseased tissue from the root of the tooth while retaining the original tooth within the mouth cavity. After removal of the tissue, the space is sealed to minimize the chance of further infections
