All About Neosporin
Available both as a cream and an ointment, Neosporin can be bought over the counter. This medicine is extremely effective as an antibiotic and can be applied after cleaning an open wound thoroughly. Cuts, burns, grazes and lacerations can all be healed adequately with the application of Neosporin. Scratches and scrapes do not get infected when Neosporin is applied either.
The medicine keeps the injured area moist and prevents further bacterial infection . Other contaminants are also prevented from causing infection after the application of Neosporin. This beneficial ointment is frequently used to reduce the pain as well.
Ingredients of Neosporin: Polymyxin B, Neomycin sulfate and Bacitracin Zinc are commonly used in Neosporin. All these chemicals prevent bacterial infection by keeping the wounded area moist and contaminant free. Pramoxine, on the other hand, is an analgesic which provides relief from pain temporarily. The ingredient starts acting as soon as it is applied to the wound externally.
Usage of Neosporin: The open wound needs to be cleaned of the blood as well as the various infecting agents. Using warm water is more effective in cleansing the wound thoroughly. The area has to be gently patted dry as well. Rubbing will only help to open up the wound further. Neosporin ointment should not be used in large quantities either. A small amount will suffice as well.
The ointment or cream should be applied to the clean and dry wound before bandaging it up properly. A gauze pad will do as well. Neosporin needs to be applied at least three to four times on the wound. However, the number of times for application is actually dependent on the nature of the wound as well as the healing progress.
Availability: Apart from being available as both creams and ointments, this beneficial antibiotic can be obtained in different sizes as well. Travel size forms are especially helpful as they can be carried around in handbags, back packs and even pockets or purses. Non aerosol cans of Neosporin are the most popular form as they can be sprayed directly into the wound without getting the hands messy.
