All about GI Tract Ulcers

Most of us live from day to day without sparing a thought for our health. As a result, we often forget to eat a balanced diet preferring instead a range of junk foods which do absolutely nothing to keep us healthy. Some people may experience periodic intense pain in the gastrointestinal tract. The pain may be aggravated by certain foods or drinks. This may well mean that you are suffering from either a gastric ulcer or duodenal ulcer.

Causes- Excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid and pepsin can damage the protective lining of the stomach causing ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract. The bacteria Helicobacter pylori may also be a contributing factor in formation of ulcers. Excessive intake of anti inflammatory and analgesic drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen may aggravate the condition. Mental stress was thought to be a contributing factor previously. However, recent studies negate this possibility. It has been noted that people who have had surgeries in the past often develop ulcers in later life.

Risk Factors- Elderly persons especially those well over the age of 55 are ideal candidates for developing ulcers.  A healthy and balanced diet is essential to eliminate the risk of GI ulcers. Physicians recommend timely intake of non-acidic, moderate meals in order to lessen the risk of ulcers. Smokers are affected by gastric ulcers much more then non-smokers. The harmful tobacco is responsible for slowing down the natural healing process of the body. The effectiveness of the medicines are decreased by nicotine and other tobacco products. Alcoholics are prone to ulcers too.

Symptoms- Abdominal pain and distress is often one of the first symptoms of ulceration within the GI tract. Nausea, vomiting and pain relief on eating may provide helpful indication about the condition of disease. Severe gastric ulcers are often characterized by black stools, fatigue and extensive weight loss.

Treatment- Surgery is the most common treatment for ulcers of the GI tract. Endoscopic therapy can be used to keep the bleeding under control if surgery is not possible. Ulcers may be life threatening if left untreated.
