Alcohol Concoctions for your chilled bones

January 15, 2010

Getting rid of a chill becomes impossible on a wintry day especially so if you are not so young any longer. The cold seems to creep up on to your bones making you huddle under the  coverings. However, sipping on some age old alcoholic concoctions will help you to get warm without  too much of an effort.

The preparations were first known to be used in Victorian England and has gone on to warm people throughout the ages. The best part of these simple to make concoctions is that you do not have to use any artificial flavors or colors which makes them healthy as well. Let us now have a look at the warmth inducing wine recipes and the ingredients that are used in it.

Eggnog- A wonderful mixture of egg whites, cream and milk together with a healthy amount of  the good old rum, whiskey or brandy will help you to enjoy the freezing winter season like never before. You can also use whole eggs if so inclined however, the flavor may change  slightly with the whitish color changing slightly. Adding some brown sugar and a pinch of nutmeg will produce a mouth watering aroma and immersing a piece of cinnamon stick within it will give it an exotic taste as well.

The entire process is generally made by using  boiling milk which is then allowed to cool down naturally before adding the alcohol.  The eggnog is a healthy drink imbibing the goodness of many ingredients including the spirits. However, it is best not to go overboard and continue drinking the tasty concoction over and over again.

Mulled Wine- A mixture of red wine and sugar together with a quartered orange and grated nutmegs topped with a few cloves and bay leaves serve as an ideal drink to abate a nasty cold during winters. While the entire recipe helps to warm your bones, cloves and bay leaves along with the nutmeg that is sprinkled over the top has certain medicinal qualities which help to contain coughing and sneezing bouts.

Some people top up the entire drink with a liberal dosage of gin as well. However you must take care not to drink it in a single gulp as it can leave you intoxicated. Sipping the concoction slowly will definitely relieve your chilled bones and restore a sense of well being.
